Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report - October 21, 2021 Most all ice cover looks to be moved out. Flows in the Oak are moderate and mostly clear. Downstream slow water areas will be freezing and closing in while upstream areas should stay open except for some bank ice. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. Plenty of water cover in the Oak for a few fresh brown trout or getting toward more post spawn fish. It looks like a real good head of turbine water with no significant overflow water. Forecast ahead is for snow showers today, chance of area wide snow tomorrow and then another warmup for the end of week. Fishing Times for Oak Orchard Creek near Albion, New York A big precipitation event that blows out the waterways with a resultant drop down to fishable conditions could be just what we need to kick off spring steelhead action. This up and down would be mostly unnoticed under ice cover anyway, except for on the Oak. Salmon will likely be found from the estuary up through town. Early Mar 2022 starting from last fall, thru the winter (weather permitting) and lasting until May! No serious icing yet and all the downstream frog water is open. Dont wait for Apr and ask if the steelhead are in yet! Since its still busy with plenty of Kings around, anglers need to carefully spot the places where the browns are shadowing the Kings. Then again who would have guessed thered be a few days in the end of March this cold! There has been light mixed precipitation thru today with highs in the 30sF. First timers from Texas, Shawn and Heather had a good morning on Lake Ontario today! The steelhead and coho salmon were both caught on spoons straight out from the Oak Orchard River. Fishing on the bays has been excellent. Sunday, we caught a decent variety: a couple of big salmon, 2 year olds, matures, a steelhead and couple of cohoes. Salmon fishing continues to improve in Niagara River, area tributaries The rain thru the end of the past weekend was not enough to cause any great change in trib flows. King salmon are scheduled for release today, that effort under the directive of the local charter community. There were briefly low flows in Sandy but my estimation is Canal feed has resumed and bumped flows back up slightly. Stay informed with the below web page. This is the available info at this time, unless something changes, it will be enforced.. With fair to good bolstered flows from the Erie Canal guys are reporting good brown trout action with a green King here and there and/or a sporty colorful coho. A spate of water there too might drop back fish to downstream spots where guys are drifting and also bring on the last of the fresh run fish. Forecast is for precipitation again Wednesday and a chance of showers thru the end of the week. Divers fired from 90-115 out on 2.5 settings. Flows will likely retreat in the overflow channel thru the mid and end part of the week while turbine flows remain high. Other area smaller tribs have low to moderate flows possibly getting a little bit of stain from the most recent precipitation. At the release time and thru the following early AM cormorant predation was largely kept in check. For now in the near term low and clear flows are not in the cards. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. You can lay a rod down on the bank or net a fish or walk along the immediate riverbank or walk around a wading obstruction for safety but anglers cannot CONGREGATE on the Archers Club grounds on the dates not included above. Forecast is for rain ending later today and a couple days of clearing for mid week. He captured the lead today aboard the Stalker, weighing in at Olcott. After a cold night last night, look for a further drop in flows all around and clearing water color. Rainfall amounts may be 0.5 0.75 inch and little to no snow accumulation expected. Conditions were ideal with stained river water and dirty near shore Lake waters on northwest winds for cover for the fish to disperse. Be sure you contact NYSDEC with comments on the predation from over-abundant cormorants and the impacts on the young stocked salmonids. Instead of the big gully washer of backside blown out conditions, it may be the backside of only slightly high flows that youll want to target after smaller runoff events from snowmelt.
